Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By creating an account or using Refine Chess ("the Service"), operated by Leonardo Amato as a sole proprietor based in Italy ("we", "us"), you agree to these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Refine Chess. If you are under 18, you confirm you have a parent or guardian's permission. The Service is not directed at children under 13.

3. Description of Service

Refine Chess is an AI-powered chess coaching tool. The Service:

  • Imports your chess games from chess.com and/or Lichess via their public APIs, with your explicit consent (by providing your username)
  • Analyzes games using the Stockfish chess engine
  • Uses generative AI (Anthropic Claude) to provide coaching insights, explanations, and personalized training recommendations
  • Generates puzzles based on patterns identified in your games

The Service is currently in alpha and provided free of charge. Pricing for any future paid tiers will be communicated at least 30 days before activation.

4. Your Account

You are responsible for:

  • Keeping your login credentials confidential
  • All activity that happens under your account
  • Providing accurate information at signup
  • Notifying us at support@refine.coach of any unauthorized access

You may not share your account or transfer it to another person.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree NOT to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or extract the source code
  • Scrape, crawl, or use automated tools beyond normal use
  • Submit excessive AI queries intended to abuse, overload, or exhaust the Service
  • Resell AI-generated coaching content or present it as a paid coaching service of your own
  • Import game data you do not have rights to (e.g., another player's private games without permission)
  • Misrepresent the AI's output as advice from a human chess coach
  • Use the Service to harass, threaten, or harm others

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts violating these rules.

6. AI Disclaimer

The Service uses generative AI (Anthropic Claude) to produce coaching content. AI output:

  • May contain errors, inaccuracies, or omissions
  • Is informational and is not a substitute for instruction from a certified human chess coach
  • Should not be relied upon for tournament preparation without independent verification
  • Does not constitute professional advice of any kind

We take reasonable measures (including grounding AI responses in verified chess data via Stockfish) to reduce inaccuracies, but make no warranty that AI content is fully accurate.

7. User-Generated Content

You retain ownership of content you submit (e.g., feedback, chat messages). By submitting content, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, store, and process that content to operate and improve the Service.

You will not submit content that is illegal, defamatory, obscene, infringes third-party rights, or contains malicious code.

8. Third-Party Services

Refine Chess integrates with:

  • chess.com Public API and Lichess API — to import publicly accessible games. Their respective terms apply.
  • Anthropic (Claude API) — to generate coaching content. Chat messages are transmitted to Anthropic per their privacy policy.
  • Supabase — to host your account and data
  • PostHog (EU Cloud) — anonymized usage data
  • Lovable — application hosting
  • Cloudflare — DNS and email routing

We are not responsible for the practices of these third parties. Please review their terms.

9. Intellectual Property

All Service code, design, branding (including "Refine", "Refine Chess", and "Tempo"), and original content are owned by Leonardo Amato. You may not copy, modify, or redistribute them without written permission.

Chess opening names, classical positions, and chess theory in the public domain remain free for general use.

10. Termination

You may delete your account at any time by emailing support@refine.coach. Your data will be permanently deleted within 30 days (subject to legal retention requirements).

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, with reasonable notice except for serious violations (e.g., security threats, abuse).

11. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee:

  • Continuous availability or uptime
  • Accuracy of game imports or AI analysis
  • That the Service will meet your specific learning needs
  • That bugs or errors will be promptly fixed during alpha

12. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by Italian law, Leonardo Amato will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for the Service in the past 12 months (currently zero during free alpha).

13. Modifications to Terms

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be announced via email at least 30 days before they take effect. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

14. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by Italian law. Disputes will be resolved by the competent court of Milan, Italy.

EU users retain rights under EU consumer protection law. Nothing in these Terms limits your statutory rights as a consumer.
